The original
Retromedia Sound Studios
was established in Red Bank, NJ in the spring of
1984.
Gear included an Otari 8-track, an Allen & Heath
console,
Neumann U87, a pair of AKG 451's, a few dynamic mics,
Roger Mayer gates and compressors and a
MasterRoom spring reverb.
The name
Retromedia was conceived
to reflect the vintage character of the
turn-of-the-century building it was
housed in. Arched doorways and
deco fixtures created a very "retro"
vibe. Some of the gear was old so
the name seemed to fit.
However,
1984 was the era of
synth pop, drum machines and big hair.
We were out of sync with the trends.
A vintage
Gretsch drum kit,
old Fender amps and an 1896
Steinway Model A grand piano
reinforced the vintage vibe.
Although
somewhat small, the
tracking room sounded pretty
good and some great recordings
originated from within these walls.
By 1996,we
had outgrown the original
space and the time had come to move on.
Construction
After
searching around town for months, a great location
was found a few blocks away.
After many weeks of planning,
consultations with contractors
and town building officials,
construction began at the
new site in the winter of 1997.
